If you want peace and quiet go live elsewhere, this is new york fuckin city. The more you complain, the more excuses the powers that be have to execute a lockdown on the cultural capital of the city...the musicians and artists who work the streets and parks trying to make a living. Go buy a set of earplugs, move to forest hills...upstate, away from my birthplace and hometown, the eternally noisy nyc...fuck you stodgy bitches and your pointless 'sleep' may my snare drum rip your subconscious slumberings apart with my divine vibrattions

I live in Ft. Greene and the owner of the Pedigree sneaker store is on the street BBQ-ing with a charcoal grill, drinking alcohol, playing loud music with 30 - 50 people on the street EVERY weekend since Memorial Day. And now that school is out, he does this during the week. This is too much! This affects quality of life. They block the street where people cannot walk pass. Anyone have any suggestions to solving this problem?

Jonah,

You are hilarious. Thank you so much for one of the best belly laughs I've had in a long time. Apparently, there ARE still some people with a brain and a sense of humor living in NYC. I am so glad I found your blog. I haven't read the dates on all of your postings, but I hope you're still at it!

Two young girls moved into my apartment building (a walk up in Manhattan with no insulation between the walls) at 7 am on a Saturday with 12 people in tow. They were back at it the next morning, Sunday, before 7 am again. Even in cities as big as London and Rome, if the police were called, these girls would have received a substantial fine for violating the noise code. In our NYC code there is a mention of "unreasonable noise levels during unreasonable hours", which, if we were a civilized city, would be enforced. All of Western Europe has noise codes which are enforced. In Germany, France, Spain, Italy and the UK, there are things that neither a company nor an individual can do between the hours of 1 am and 7 am. In Italy, France, Spain and Germany, there are also noise restrictions during the "siesta" hours of 12 pm -4 pm. Hence one of the many reasons they enjoy a quality of life that simply doesn't exist here.

I'm sorry to say folks, but this is NYC. the city that never sleeps, remember? noise is part of the city. It will never be enforced simply because this is a very densesly populated city. if noise bothers you so much, you have to be very careful where you live or better yet, move to the country.
